Porsche 918 Spyder

This is the fastest and most powerful road-going Porsche model yet—the ultra complex and breathtakingly expensive 918 Spyder.
Carrying on a celebrated line of racetrack-inspired limited-production specials, the 918 Spyder was first revealed as a concept at the 2010 Geneva motor show prior to receiving an official production greenlight later that year.
Since then the targa-roofed Porsche has undergone an intensive three-year development program culminating in a final validation test at the Nürburgring in early September. There factory driver Marc Lieb established an official 6-minute, 57-second lap time, undercutting the Carrera GT by a stout 33 seconds. Up to now the GT was the fastest road-going Porsche model to ever lap the iconic German race circuit.
Power for the new carbon-fiber Porsche is a mid-mounted 4.6-liter V8 gasoline engine based on the engine from the earlier RS Spyder race car. Two synchronous electric motors -- one mounted up front and another at the rear -- supplement the V8. Together, the three power sources produce 875 hp at 8,500 rpm and a thumping 944 lb-ft of torque. (Some perspective: The Carrera GT's 5.7-liter V10 gasoline engine, designed for a Le Mans challenger, kicks out 603 hp and less than half the 918 Spyder's torque, at 434 lb-ft.)
Power is delivered via both a fixed gear and seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox; the former operates on the front axle to provide electric drive to the front wheels at speeds up to 165 mph, while the latter sits at the rear and drives the rear wheels with a combination of electric and gasoline-engine power. Depending on the drive mode selected, the new Porsche can operate in front-, rear- or four-wheel drive modes.
A 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery mounted underneath the gasoline engine in back provides the energy used to run the electric motors. The battery comes with a seven-year guarantee and adds a significant 692 lbs to the 918 Spyder's 3,691-lb overall curb weight.
Nevertheless the official performance claims are spectacular. When fitted with an optional Weissach performance package (lightweight components paring some 88 lbs from the curb weight), the Spyder hits 62 mph in 2.6 seconds, 124 mph in 7.2 seconds and 186 mph in 19.9 seconds.
With a sophisticated aerodynamic package including a rear wing extending from the rear body work nearly 5 inches and providing three different downforce levels, the Spyder reaches a 214-mph top speed. In electric mode it hits 93 mph before the gasoline engine fires.
The truly remarkable thing about the new Porsche is while it delivers sledgehammer performance, its state-of-the-art gasoline-electric hybrid driveline allows it to record outstanding economy figures when driven at a leisurely pace. Porsche is quick to highlight the official 78.4 mpg consumption. However, it is achieved almost entirely in electric mode using a loophole in the European test procedure. In real-world conditions, you should expect figures similar to those of more conventional combustion-engine powered sports cars.

Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series 2014

The current Mercedes SLS lineup is quickly filling up with a Coupe , aRoadster , a GT3 version , and, sometime in the near future, an E-Cell version. However, Mercedes isn’t done yet. As promised yesterday the fifth model in the line-up has been officially announced today: the SLS AMG Black Series.
The new SLS Black Series has borrowed some of the styling cues seen first on the GT3 version and of course combines them with some of the usual Black Series design elements. But first Mercedes worked on reducing the car’s total weight: they added lots of carbon fiber elements, a new titanium-made exhaust system, new wheels and some lightweight sports seats. As a result the new Black Series is about 154 pounds lighter than the current model.
When you add an improved engine under the hood: a 622-horsepowerV-8 engine, you will easily notice that the car’s performance numbers have also improved: the 0-to-60 mph sprint time drops 0.2 seconds and top speed is now 195 mph.

Underground Racing Twin Turbo Ferrari 458 Italia

The Ferrari 458 Italia is regarded by many as near-perfect (including us). Breathtaking styling, impeccable handling  and dynamics, and an engine unmatched in its naturally aspirated performance by any other automaker; it really is a gift sent from god.

In stock form the car’s 4.5-liter V-8 produces 570 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, enough to blast it from 0-62 mph in less than 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 202 mph. Insane numbers by anyone’s standards, unless of course you happen to drive twin-turbocharged supercars every day.

So, understandably, for the guys at Underground Racing, a stock Ferrari 458 Italia just won’t cut it.

From the makers of the fire-breathing Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV and aLamborghini Gallardo capable of 250 mph top speeds, comes a new twin-turbocharging kit for the Ferrari 458 Italia. The kit is still in development but these pictures, which show a prototype version, reveal a very neat looking, almost OEM-like, twin-turbocharging kit for the Italian thoroughbred.

Underground Racing’s new kit will come in two flavors; Stage 1, which is based on a stock 458 Italia engine, and Stage 2, which gets one with a rebuilt engine using custom internals.

As mentioned, the kit is still in development so no performance figures have been divulged as yet. However, if Underground Racing’s previous work is any indication, you can expect it to be one heck of a power-up.

koenigsegg one-1

koenigsegg is celebrating its 20th birthday this year, and for the occasion, the Swedish specialists are taking the hypercar to the next level with its new Agera One:1 at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. In fact, it claims that, because it is the first production car with a one megawatt of power (1,341 hp), and a power-to-weight ratio of one-to-one (kilogram to horsepower), it goes beyond super or hyper and is actually the "world's first megacar."This road-bound rocketship is powered by twin-turbocharged, 5.0-liter V8 with the previously mentioned 1,341 hp and 1,011 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and electronically-controled differential makes sure all that grunt gets to the wheels. It is equipped with seemingly science-fiction features like variable geometry turbos in custom, 3D-printed housings and a 3D-printed titanium exhaust. While Koenigsegg claims top speed was not a factor when creating the One:1, it says that it has a simulated top speed of around 440 km/h(273 miles per hour), which would make it the world's fastest production vehicle. However, the One:1 can never hold the Guinness world record for top speed because only six will be built, all of which it says are already spoken for.Instead of speed, Koenigsegg says that the One:1 is meant to be a "track focused car." The Swedes claim 2 Gs of cornering capability on road-legal tires, thanks to up to 1,345 pounds of downforce at 160 mph from an active rear wing and independent, active left and right front flaps. In addition to those aids, the ride height, dampers and spring rates all adjust with the car's speed. The chassis can predict the road ahead using GPS, and drivers can even study telemetry later with a 3G connection sending the car's data to an iPhone app.The One:1 seems to be the next automotive quantum leap on par with the Bugatti Veyron. However, no one outside of Koenigsegg has actually driven it yet. It will be very interesting to see if real life stands up to what the megacar claims on paper. Scroll down to read the press release about the brand's spectacular 20th birthday present, and make sure to check out the high-res gallery, which includes a full spec sheet and great detail on the One:1's aerodynamics package.
